A Valiant Fighter

This Week’s Hints to help you along:

  • A dozen in service, only 3 to 5 at a time rose to face hundreds of the enemy.
  • Battles raged for just a few days before the airfield was overrun in 1941.
  • Its final score stands at an unbelievable 11 kills for zero lost in combat.
  • Powered by the HS-12crs V-12, it boasted 860 hp and a 3-bladed prop.
  • Ultimately destroyed by the pilots to prevent capture when the nation fell.
  • Suspiciously similar to a Hawker Hurricane with a wood/fabric rear fuselage.

So do you know what this aircraft is?

I almost confused this with one of the Morane-Salunier types, but the slightly different tail fin indicate that this is most likely the Rokozarski IK-3.

Correct! It is the Rogožarski IK-3, a Yugoslov single-seat fighter from 1940/1941. Well done!

The aircraft may be a “Polish Valor”. Years ago I saw a picture in a model airplane plans catalog, possibly a catalog of model airplane plans offered by “Cleveland Model Airplanes” which was owned by Mr. E.T. Packard that had plans for a rubber powered model airplane called by the same name. Of course the model was not a true scale and did not look very muchl like the photograph in this contest. The catalog had another model called “Austrian Chivalry” Maybe someone out there has on of these old catalogs and can shed some more light on the aircraft.
