Not a NASA Project

This Week’s Hints to help you along:

  • Another wartime design, this one meant to press supersonic speeds.
  • Flight tested as a glider successfully before the end of World War II.
  • The designer would go on to producing one of the USAF’s fastest bombers.
  • Looks like a NASA X-Plane, but it is not, though it was tested in the USA.

So do you know what this aircraft is?

    “Zhat iz very eazy!”

It is the “Akaflieg Darmstadt München DM-1”. This research glider was designed by Alexander Lippisch and was to be developed into the Lippisch P.13a interceptor aircraft.

Today it is been restored at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility.

Yesterday, I wrote about same project for my group where I am the Administrator of JAT Memories – that’s Yugoslav Airlines!

The plane in the article was a RAM Jet powered test plane that could achieve a speed of 2.3 Mach. The project was in the late World War II by Dr. Alexander Lippisch and, due to fuel shortages in Germany, was designed to use coal pellets as fuel rather than kerosene!
